► It’s the Wraith soft-top coming spring 2016
► Confirmed at LA dealer convention

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today confirmed the new name for 2016’s new Wraith soft-top: it’ll be called the Rolls Dawn.

The name was announced at the annual dealer convention in Los Angeles for the brand's 130 retailers around the world.

‘Our new Rolls-Royce Dawn promises a striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date,’ said Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, Rolls’ CEO. His explanation may be typically gushing, but it is illuminating nonetheless.

‘Dawn is a beautiful new open-top motor car with a name that suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds – an awakening, an opening up of one’s senses and a burst of sunshine. It will be the most social of super-luxury motor cars for those beautiful people who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s social hotspots.’

Rolls-Royce Dawn: a quickie history

Forget the English christian name; this is instead designed to conjure that magical time in the morning, a fresh start.

Rolls-Royce has previous here; it built just 28 drophead-bodied Silver Dawns from 1950 until 1954. It remains one of the rarest Rollers on the road and strikes an elegant pose (see above). The company will have its work cut out trying to match the elegance of this.

From spring 2016, the name will be applied again to the convertible Wraith, as Goodwood rolls out extra bodystyles to its smallest Ghost range, reflecting the diversification strategy seen on the larger Phantom family.
